/ XWPE - The XW Programmer's Editor

Worum geht's

The XWPE Editor is both a normal Editor and a Programmer's Editor, which does work in both X11 mode and in Terminal mode. The X11 mode features a nice appearance. This X11 mode is internally still a Terminal Window but the subwindows are drawn in a fashionable way. All its mode are integrated into a single binary. Der XWPE Editor ist sowohl ein normaler Editor als auch ein Programmier-Editor, der sowohl in einem Terminal Fenster als auch auf dem X11 Schirm arbeitet. Der X11 Modus sieht dabei besser aus als der Terminal Modus, obwohl der Editor intern immer noch ein Terminal ansteuert. Die verschiedenen Modi sind dabei sogar in einem einzigen Programm-Binary integriert.
The old XWPE had not been maintained for quite a time, so Dennis Payne <dulsi@identicalsoftware.com> has been putting his hands on the code lately. Some of his versions are actually full of flaws, and nethertheless I had not the time to introduce the changes that I had made before he took over the role of an active Maintainer. So it is just in recent times that I have brought about some features and patches for XWPE. Einige Versionen sind leider fehlerhaft, und überhaupt hatte ich erst zuletzt Zeit meine eigenen Änderungen am XWPE durchzusehen und als Patches verfügbar zu machen.
At the time of writing, Dennis has rejected all patches I have been sending to him. Bisher hat Dennis leider alle Patches abgelehnt, die ich ihm geschickt habe.

The bak file patch does change the way XWPE is creating backup files. Traditionally XWPE is using the DOS style which had been there in the TurboC IDE that the XWPE is modelled alike - that is, an extension .c is replaced with .bak . The bak file patch does introduce the Unix-style as known from Emacs and other tools, so there's an appended tilde ~

this one features a simple replacement in the source code of XWPE, autoconfigured by detecting a UNIX-like system.

suffixbak patch for xwpe-1.5.21

this one does watch for the SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX environment variable, just like the GNU filetools do. If it is not there (or empty) then the traditional DOS-bak mode is used. You can set this to export SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX=~ in bourne shell. Even more, you can use a compilation macro (eventually called SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX in the Makefile) to change the default to unix-bak mode.

Der bak-File patch ändert das Verhalten wie XWPE backup-Files anlegt. Das ursprüngliche Verhalten von XWPE ist nähmlich DOS-ähnlich, ganz so wie es das Vorbild der TurboC IDE tat. Dabei wird eine .c Erweiterung durch einen .bak Erweiterung ersetzt. Der bak-Patch führt nun den Unix-Stil, bei dem eine Tilde ~ angehängt wird, ganz so wie man vom Emacs und anderen Unix-tool kennt.

Dieser Patch ersetzt ganz einfach das Verhalten im source code von XWPE, autokonfiguriert wenn ein UNIX-ähnliches System erkannt wird.

Dieser Patch achtet auf die SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX Umgebungs-variable, so wie das die GNU filetools machen. Wenn sie nicht gesetzt ist (oder leer ist), so wird der alte DOS-bak modus genommen. Man kann sie aber auch auf export SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX=~ in einer bourne shell setzen. Darüberhinaus gibt es auch ein Compiler-Makro (das zufällig SIMPLE_BACKUP_SUFFIX im Makefile heisst) und mit dem man das Default-Verhalten auf den Unix-Stil abändern kann.

The shaded color patch gives you the option to define different colors for your background colors. To recall some history, the CGA background had always been a little darker than the CGA foreground colors (but most VGA cards don't do it anymore). At present I am really using it only to change the grey colors to make some better contrast on some visuals that tends to be too bright or too dark.

This patch does also fix the standard behaviour when "all colorcells (are) allocated" - it just does a fallback into some black&white mode instead of bailing out.

The same applies to those guys who are low on colorcells - if there are less colorcells available, the background colors will just match the foreground colors.

Der shaded Patch gibt Dir die Möglichkeit andere Farbzuordnungen für die Hintergrund-farben zu setzen. Aus der Historie ist dies von CGA bekannt, wo die Hintergrundfarben immer ein bischen dunkler waren als die Vordergrundfarben (auch wenn die meisten VGA Karten dies nicht mehr implementieren). Tatsächlich verwende ich es nur um die Grauwerte zu ändern um den Kontrast auf verschiedenen Monitoren zu verbessern, die ein wenig heller oder dunkler scheinen.

Dieser Patch ändert auch das Standard-Verhalten falls "all colorcells allocated" sind - es geht auf eine Art Schwarz-Weiss Modus zurück anstatt das Laden abzubrechen.

Das gleiche gilt auch für alle die wenig Colorcells auf ihrem Schirm über haben - im Zweifel werden für die Hintergrundfarben einfach die Vordergrund-Farbdefinitionen genommen.
